What are human rights?

Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible.

Universal human rights are often expressed and guaranteed by law, in the forms of treaties, customary international law, general principles and other sources of international law. International human rights law lays down obligations of Governments to act in certain ways or to refrain from certain acts, in order to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms of individuals or groups.

On the 16th February 2013, over two thousand participants joined in the demonstration to show their solidarity.
As strength stands in numbers, the masses of refugee activist and supporters stood as one body demonstrating. The demonstration took place in Vienna with an overwhelming attendance of both refugee activist and supporters. The chanting words of their struggle "equal rights and human rights echoed cross the streets bring out onlookers, who were curious about their fight for human rights. Which truly did show that their message was being heard, perhaps not only by those in government but also the citizens.

This time its clear that in the struggle for human rights and fight against racism the efforts of the refugees were brought to life.

Perhaps in time such events do help give a better perspective to those who are blind folded to the outside world leaving them with questions of what truly happens right around them. I hope that in time some resolution is found to make the refugee struggle worth while and truly heard.
